Daytona Milton Keynes splits opinion. Some drivers love it and others don't see the appeal. I think it is a fantastic circuit, with enough speed to be fun and enough corners to keep technical drivers interested. The learning curve is steep. Compared with shorter tracks such as Clay Pigeon, the gap between faster and slower drivers tends to be big. The key to success is not holding back. There are lots of slow corners, so you will get plenty of chances to go up the inside.
The turn numbers below are the ones I used when I wrote this guide.
Read the corner-by-corner guide
Turn 1 and the chicane at turns 2 and 3
You cross the start-finish line at the top of the track flat out. The viewing area and race control are on your right, so that is where you will see warning boards and black flags. Turn 1 hits you like a hammer. Start out wide and ease the kart through this left-hander without lifting. The kart naturally moves to the right and onto a short straight before the chicane at turns 2 and 3.
You can take the chicane faster than you think. Stay out to the right, brake, and aim to just miss the tyres at the entry to turn 2 on the left. Then flick the kart over to the right, hit the apex and move back to the left-hand side of the track. It all happens very quickly and takes time to learn, but you make up a lot of time here once you have it.
Turn 4
After turn 3 there is some rougher concrete on the left of the track. Using it lets you carry more speed, but you then want to move about three quarters of the way to the right for turn 4. There is more rough concrete on the inside of this corner that you can use. Aim for a reasonably late apex that takes you out to the right of the track without running onto the grass, then head left for turn 6.
Turn 6, the double apex
This long right-hander has two apexes. Brake, turn in early and feather the throttle, taking care not to drift too wide before you cut back in to the middle of the exit. Don't carry too much speed in. If you do, you will run wide and lose a lot of time. A raised section of track on the exit helps you carry more speed as you head down the hill to turn 7.
Turn 7 and the hairpin at turn 8
Start out wide on the left, hit the middle of turn 7 and let the kart take you out to the right of the track. Again, don't carry too much speed, or you will be heading for the grass and a tyre wall and will lose speed before the hairpin at turn 8.
The exit of the hairpin is really important. Move to the right, brake and turn in for a late apex that leaves the kart in a straight line, so that your foot is to the floor as you head down the hill. Exit too early and you can't carry as much pace. Exit too late and you have to fight to avoid running wide, so you can't go flat out.
The downhill kink and turn 9
On the way down the hill there is a left-hand kink. Take it on the inside, then drift to the right and brake for turn 9, a 90-degree left-hander. This is the fastest part of the circuit, so the braking point matters. Build up to it slowly until you can use the line in the tarmac as your marker. Turn in quickly, just missing the tyres on the inside, and carry as much speed as you can through the exit. There is raised track on the outside if you need it. After that you get a breather as you head up the hill.
Turn 10
Keep to the right of the track. With practice, turn 10 can be taken flat out with a lift halfway through, so that you exit on the left of the track. The exit matters because if you are too far right you won't be ready for the first of two really slow corners. Build up your speed here and don't try it flat out on your first lap. It is all too easy to end up in a tyre wall.
Turns 11 and 12
Turn 11 is really tricky to get right. You arrive carrying a lot of speed, then need to brake as hard as you dare and slow the kart to what feels like a crawl. Turn right, hit the middle of the corner and get your foot down to build speed before turn 12.
Turn 12 is a left-hander with rough concrete on the inside. Start out on the left of the track and aim for a late apex so that you carry plenty of pace out of it. The kart naturally moves over to the right, putting a wheel on the raised section of track, and you head flat out over the start-finish line.
